Welcome Message from Bishop Paul

The Right Reverend Paul Victor Marshall, Th.D, D.D. is our chief pastor and bishop. He was consecrated the 8th bishop of Bethlehem on June 29, 1996. Bishop Paul was called to Bethlehem from Yale where he was an Associate Professor and Acting Director of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. He is the author of numerous books and articles written both for scholars and clergy and for the general public. He serves on the Standing Commission on Music and Liturgy for the national Episcopal Church. In Bethlehem the episcopate is exercised in community. The Diocesan House ministry team worships and works together daily to live into our mission statement: Live God's love. Tell what you have seen and heard.

Bishop Paul tells us, "There seems to be nothing God requires of us that God will not empower us to do if we put ourselves where the power is."

The Bishop can be reached at Extension 222 or by email.

Born in Pottsville (Schuylkill County) and ordained a priest for the Diocese of Bethlehem, he had been vicar of St. George’s Church, Olyphant (1963-66), rector of St. Mark’s Church, Dunmore (1964-74), and rector of St. Mary’s Church, Reading (1974-1980).

A former Roman Catholic monsignor, he served as communication director for the Diocese of Allentown for 13 years, became an Episcopalian in 1981 and was received as an Episcopal priest in 1999.

· Bakery, an interactive diocesan list. Subscribe via the "Get Connected" box on the home page or tell Bill you want to join.
· Liaison with local media.

Bill understands his role on diocesan staff in the following ways. (1) Communicating/interpreting gospel imperatives to the diocesan community and the wider public. (2) Communicating the vision of the episcopate and the ministries and programs that flow from that vision whereby the Episcopal Church in this place and at this time attempts to do the work to which we hear the Lord calling us. (3) Discovering and developing creative and compelling ways, through many media, to tell stories that help our diocesan community imagine 'the kingdom at hand' where we live and work and worship … for it's impossible to achieve what one cannot somehow, 'through a glass darkly' conceive. (4) Developing with others community-building communication that employs many media for the sake of the gospel. (5) Helping the community discover that communication is at the heart of the life of a church that claims to live by the gospel. As the diocesan mission statement proclaims, Live God's love: tell what you have seen and heard.
