You,
too, can be a Crouton
For more than 300 people in the Diocese of Bethlehem,
around the Episcopal Church, USA, the worldwide Anglican Communion,
and in a few other denominations and faith communities, "crouton"
evokes an image beyond salad and stuffing.
Crouton has become a form of address -- as in Dear
Croutons -- in the Ecunet
cyberspace forum called Bethlehem of PA where a virtual community
reads news and information about the Diocese of Bethlehem and elsewhere
and shares reflections and conversation on church and world events.
Why croutons? Bethlehem, in Hebrew, means House
of Bread. When he was a member of our Diocesan House team, Scott
Allen was searching for a component of a loaf of bread as a designation
for the cyberspace members of our electronic group discussion. Crumb
didn't sound at all flattering. Hence, Crouton -- rich in taste,
spicy, smooth, adding texture to and enhancing the flavor of the
cool green of salad. Scott adopted as his online signature during
those years "A crouton in the House of Bread."
News gets around in our cyberspace forum long before
you see it in print in Diocesan Life. If you have an email
address, you too can be a crouton in the House of Bread.
