Mission Statement:
The mission of the EAM Committee in the Diocese of
Bethlehem is to combat the conditions in our part of Appalachia that
cause many people in our communities to feel helpless and hopeless.
Our focus is on issues of poverty, economic justice and care for the
environment. We seek to educate and motivate the people in our parishes
to accept the same challenge, and to empower and equip them to work
toward this goal by providing the necessary resources.
Description:
The EAM Committee represents the diocese in Episcopal
Appalachian Ministries, which is a regional organization of 15 diocese
ranging from Bethlehem to the Carolinas and west to Indianapolis.
The committee participates in ministry at four levels: our diocese,
the "northern Tier" of Episcopal Appalachian Ministries,
consisting of Bethlehem, the Dioceses of Central Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh;
EAM, and the Commission on Religion in Appalachia (CORA), the ecumenical
affiliate. Within Bethlehem the committee seeks to support existing
ministries that correspond with their goals and to inspire and nourish
new ministries that are needed.
Episcopal Appalachian Ministries Small Grants Initiative is seeking applicants for its Spring awards. The grants are intended to be used as seed money for organizations to seize opportunities of a one-time nature. On-going operating costs will not be given priority. Successful applications will usually involve helping Appalachians address regional issues such as poverty, health care, unemployment, education, cultural affirmation, or the environment through direct service. Grants are usually $500 to $3000. The application deadline for the Spring awards is February 28th. Applications are available online or by contacting The Rev. Dcn. Gordon Brewer, Executive Coordinator for EAM, at episcopalappministries@gmail.com.
